Breaking Free: The Backpack You Didn’t Know You Were Carrying

Midweek Check-In – Wednesday, 9th July

🌄 Good Morning, Midweek Warriors

Welcome to your midweek check-in on the Breaking Free programme. Whether you’ve just joined us or you’re already on the path, this is your reminder to pause, reconnect, and gently return to the practice of awareness.

As always, all related resources can be found in the Coaching & Mentoring WhatsApp Group. Simply tap Media > Documents to access the Breaking Free PDF and any weekly worksheets.

🔍 Week One Focus: Awareness, Permission, and Safety

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
— Carl Jung

In our recent workshop, we explored the foundations of emotional unburdening. Week One invites us to slow down and ask:

  • What’s keeping you stuck?
  • What emotions are you carrying that you haven’t fully named or felt?
  • Where can you build safety to allow those emotions to be witnessed?

We’re not here to fix or solve just yet. We’re here to notice.

🎒 The Backpack You Didn’t Know You Were Carrying

On Saturday, we engaged in a powerful visualisation exercise: “The Backpack You Didn’t Know You Were Carrying.”

Imagine that throughout life, every painful memory, unresolved tension, and emotional suppression becomes a stone placed into a backpack. Over time, this backpack grows heavier, affecting our movement, energy, and clarity.

There comes a point where we must ask ourselves:

  • What am I carrying that no longer serves me?
  • How is this weight affecting my life and relationships?
  • What can I begin to put down, even temporarily?

“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”
— C.S. Lewis

💬 Wednesday Prompt: What Did You Give Yourself Permission to Feel?

Let’s bring this into practice.

Complete this sentence:
📝 “This week, I gave myself permission to…”

For me, it was frustration and anger. Not as something to run from, but as something to utilise. A friend shared an old photo of me — I looked heavier, tired, and lost. That image sparked something deep: a refusal to go back to where I was physically, mentally, and emotionally.

That anger? It became fuel.
That frustration? It turned into focus.

This is the invitation. Let your emotions guide you — not control you — as you reconnect with your why.

🗺️ Burden Mapping: Naming the Invisible Load

Another practice we began is the Burden Mapping Exercise. Start identifying the patterns, thoughts, and emotions you’re carrying on a daily basis. Where do they show up? How long have they been there?

This isn’t about judgment.
It’s about seeing clearly.

Because you can’t release what you haven’t acknowledged.

💡 Why Check-Ins Matter: Beyond Training Room Syndrome

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”
— Jim Rohn

Workshops can be powerful. They open our eyes. But without regular reflection, we fall into Training Room Syndrome — where the high of the experience fades and real life swallows us back into autopilot.

That’s why these midweek check-ins matter. They’re not just content. They’re calibration points to your inner compass.
