Introduction

Many of us believe that problem solving is a process of consciously thinking through every possible outcome until a solution appears. But this assumption often leads to overthinking, mental fatigue, and paralysis by analysis.

In truth, solutions rarely appear while we’re actively trying to find them. Instead, they often emerge when we step away — when we’re in the shower, taking a walk, or doing something unrelated. This shift in understanding how our brain works can lead to more effective decision-making and better mental well-being.


The Myth of the Prefrontal Cortex

Our prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain associated with conscious thought, reasoning, and decision-making — is a limited resource. It’s great for short-term processing, such as evaluating facts or asking questions, but it’s not where deep insights usually occur.

When we try to solve a problem through overthinking, we are overloading the prefrontal cortex, constantly seeking more information or obsessively reviewing the same facts. This doesn’t lead to clarity. It leads to exhaustion.

Here’s a key shift: don’t try to solve the whole problem. Instead, focus on identifying the next actionable step.

Often, a complete solution lies far into the future. But there’s always a next step that’s available and doable right now. The ability to identify and act on that next step is far more powerful than aiming for perfection.


Seek Minimum Effective Information

One major block in action is the information trap — the belief that we need more and more information before we can proceed. Instead, ask:

“What is the minimum amount of information I need to take the next step?”

This cuts through perfectionism and endless preparation. Aim to gather the highest value information — the 20% that will deliver 80% of the results, following the Pareto Principle.


Trust the Process: Hand It Over

Once you’ve collected your minimum effective information, tell your unconscious:

“Here’s everything I’ve got. I trust you to find a way forward.”

Then step away. Go for a walk, make a meal, chat with a friend — whatever will help you detach. Don’t micromanage your mind.

Micromanaging your brain is like micromanaging a team member: constantly asking, “Are you doing it right?” just slows them down and damages trust.


Train Your Mind Like a Team

Treat your unconscious like a trusted partner:

  • Gather and present the brief.
  • Step back and allow it to work.
  • Stay open to the insight when it arrives.

It takes training and trust, but this mindset shift is transformative.
