Why We Struggle With Our Goals — And How to Change That

Why We Struggle With Our Goals — And How to Change That

Over the past 10+ years of coaching and mentoring, I’ve seen a recurring pattern. People get incredibly motivated about a goal — maybe it’s improving their health, launching a business idea, writing a book, or advancing their career. They feel inspired, they fill out vision boards, they talk about their dreams in workshops, and some even declare them boldly in public. But then… silence.

The spark fizzles out. Life takes over. Responsibilities pile up, calendars fill with unavoidable commitments, and those once-powerful goals are pushed to the back burner. Again and again.

Sound familiar?

You’re not alone. And it’s not because you’re lazy or lack ambition. The problem is usually a misunderstanding of two key things:

  1. How progress is really made, and
  2. How much capacity we actually have in our daily lives.

Let me break it down.

The Illusion of Big Bursts of Productivity

Many people assume that meaningful progress needs big chunks of time — two or three uninterrupted hours of deep work. But unless you’re already living in a highly structured or distraction-free environment, those hours rarely appear.

The truth is, small, consistent effort beats occasional intense effort every time.

Even five or ten minutes a day, done with intention and focus, is far more effective than sporadic long sessions that never happen. The energy you build from those daily micro-wins keeps your momentum alive. It’s about developing rhythm, not heroics.

Weekly Reviews: The Secret Weapon

Here’s how I work with my clients and mentoring groups to keep that rhythm going:

  • Start of the week: We set clear, simple intentions. Not a wish list — just one or two goals that you genuinely want to move forward on.
  • Daily check-ins: Each day, we check whether you’ve taken even the smallest action. Why? Because if you’ve missed Monday and Tuesday, and there’s no sign of movement by Wednesday or Thursday… chances are, the week will pass without any progress.
  • 28-Day Completion Cycle: I coach people through 4 weeks of consistent, guided action. It’s not about perfection — it’s about presence. Show up daily, work on your dream in small chunks, and by the end of the month, you’ll have moved miles further than you thought possible.

Making It Fit Into Real Life

The most common excuse people give is: “I don’t have time.” And I get it. Life is full.

But here’s a simple truth:

If you don’t block out time for what matters, life will fill it with what doesn’t.

That’s why time-blocking — after you’ve accounted for your non-negotiable commitments — is essential. Even if it’s just 10 minutes after dinner. Those small scheduled windows keep the dream alive.

Why Our Coaching Groups Work

The power of the group format is accountability, momentum, and support. When you’re surrounded by others also showing up for their goals — and when someone is there to guide you, challenge you, and check in — you’re far more likely to follow through.

Each week, we begin with intention setting. And every day, we check on progress. It’s gentle but firm. Supportive but focused. It’s about building the muscle of showing up — even when you don’t feel like it.

Because that’s where the change happens.
